To: People facing a life transitionI got the call at 7:30 in the
evening. The company I worked for for 22 years had been sold. "Don't
come back to work, don't contact any of your clients," the
caller told me.
My $150,000 a year job in
pharmaceutical sales had vanished. At the age of 53 I suddenly had
no income and no prospects. My world was crashing around me.
I panicked. For two years I
floundered, working at a job I hated, forcing myself to create
outcomes that didn't work, spending way too much money on programs
that promised results and produced nothing.
That
Hopeless Feeling
I had bought into the old philosophy:
Get a college degree, the more advanced the better, get a job, work
your way up the ladder and stay until you retired. My job was a
large part of who I was. After 22 years with the same company I KNEW
I would retire there.
To go from being comfortably employed
in a secure job to sitting at home and worrying about the mortgage
payment shattered my belief in the system and killed my hopes for a bright
future. As I hung up the phone, my first thought was, "What do I do
now?" I knew nothing about the job market. I had no idea how to
create a resume or shine at a job interview.
And even if I could get an interview or a job, I could no longer
trust that any job would be secure.
Have people been laid off in your

think they have a secure job? The ugly truth is that the old
philosophy is dead. Companies will throw you out at the first hint
of financial trouble. Virtually all jobs can end on a moment's
notice. In today's economy companies can disappear in an instant.

way to make money, want to feel valuable, worthy and to keep their
dignity intact.
There is a Solution
Like all of you, I did everything
right. I was the Number One representative in the Western Region.
Yet, instead of going to the Bahamas with the rest of the top
producers, I got a phone call and they mailed me my last check.
The company's actions weren't personal
in my case and they won't be in yours. Yet these actions create very
personal crises in people's lives.
I survived my layoff even though it
took me years to get back on my feet. At first, I
desperately needed information and support. I took jobs I hated. I
spent money I didn't have on training that didn't work. I searched and searched
and slowly stumbled on the answers I needed one by one.
I started analyzing
where I wanted to go with the rest of my career, found mentors to help me get there and took
the steps necessary to make it happen.

struggle like I did.
When I was first laid off, I couldn't

me. It took years before I finally figured out that there was a
better way. As I look back on those experiences, I see the mistakes

taken in the beginning.

lose my job suddenly. Most of the problems I had came from lack of
knowledge and planning.
